Master of Health Science

Description

This course provides graduate healthcare practitioners with the advanced knowledge and skill required to critically review, analyse, evaluate and apply the theory and practise of Western herbal medicine. Students will develop advanced expertise through the synthesis of theoretical foundations, traditions, evidence and contemporary treatment protocols.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:


understand a specialist area relevant to the professional practice of Western herbal medicine;

apply scholarship, academic writing and information-processing skills to the critical evaluation and transformation of a specialist area;

demonstrate a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of a diverse range of research methodologies and their appropriate application to specialist knowledge; and

demonstrate research integrity and ethics, environmental responsibility, cultural awareness and respect for diversity within their academic development.

To be considered for admission into the Master of Health Science, a candidate shall either:
1. (a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification in the same or related healthcare discipline from a recognised educational provider accredited by peak national or international bodies. This may include, but is not limited to: Western Herbal Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, Complementary Medicine or Integrative Medicine; or
(b) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification in a different healthcare discipline from a recognised educational provider accredited by peak national or international bodies. This may include, but is not limited to: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic, Osteopathic Medicine, Homeopathic Medicine, Nutritional Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, General Medical Practice or Pharmacy; or
(c) hold an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same or related healthcare discipline from a recognised educational provider accredited by peak national or international bodies. This may include, but is not limited to: Western Herbal Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, Complementary Medicine or Integrative Medicine; or
(d) hold a pre-2015 AQF Level 8 Graduate Diploma in Health Science (Herbal Medicine) from UNE; or
(e) hold a 2015-onwards AQF Level 8 Graduate Diploma in Health Science (Herbal Medicine) from UNE; and

2. be a member of an appropriate professional association relevant to their healthcare discipline. This may include, but is not limited to: The National Herbalists Association of Australia, the Australian Natural Therapists Association, the Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists, the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists, the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, the Irish Register of Herbalists, the American Herbalists Guild or the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association.
