Curtin University

Curtin University is Western Australia's largest and most multi-cultural university. With a strong commitment to international engagement, Curtin boasts Australia's third largest international student population. This cultural diversity adds a rich and valuable dimension to Curtin’s campus atmosphere and also prepares graduates to live and work in an increasingly global environment.

Curtin is widely recognised for the practical and applied nature of its courses, which equips graduates with essential skills through exposure to industry and business, and research which focuses on solving real world problems. This combination enables graduates to be effective in the workplace immediately upon graduation.

The Faculty of Health Sciences follows a long tradition of discipline-based course delivery in the health professions, offering courses in Biomedical Sciences, Oral Health Therapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Speech Pathology and Public Health, and is well integrated with the professions in which our graduates practice.

The Faculty offers a student experience which is bold, relevant and integrated offering exciting opportunities for personal and professional growth that will culminate in an extensive and satisfying health career. We are proud of the fact that we educate more health professionals than any other WA tertiary institution.

Inter professional Education (IPE) forms the foundation of many Faculty of Health Sciences initiatives enabling health professionals to learn from each other, sharing knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for collaborative practice. The hallmark of IPE occurs when participants understand the core principles and concepts of each contributing health discipline. Evidence of the benefits of IPE has been reported around the world, specifically its role in the improvement in safety and quality of health care delivery.

Health Sciences staff are actively involved in clinical practice and leading professionals from the health care sector also contribute to teaching our courses. At the same time, our strong academic orientation keeps us at the forefront of evidence-based practice. Aligned with our teaching interests, the Faculty includes a large number of major research groups in the areas of prevention and management of chronic disease, indigenous health, mental health, drug and alcohol, ageing and population health. Through our research programs, we contribute to the development of new strategies to improve health.

The establishment of the multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute, the first of its kind in Australia, brings together Curtin's excellent health researchers to work with industry partners, government and the wider community. CHIRI will revolutionise the education of our health professionals, focusing on inter professional education programs and research opportunities while providing vital clinical practice opportunities which will enhance student learning and experiences.
