Listeria has been found during routine tests of silverside meat sold through a local supermarket chain.

SA Health says there have been no reported cases of infection from the meat sold through Drakes Supermarkets, but all product is being withdrawn.

The affected meat is labelled as Drakes Premium Gourmet Selection silverside with use-by dates of October 15 and November 5.

SA Health spokesman Chris Lease said the Listeria was found during routine testing.

"While we have not received notification of anyone contracting Listeria from the product, the infection can be extremely serious if it is contracted by the elderly, pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems," Dr Lease said.

"Many people are exposed to Listeria often with only mild illness resulting, but it can be more serious in the at-risk groups."

Listeria infection starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, and sometimes diarrhoea.

People can start feeling ill within a few days, but symptoms can take up to six weeks to appear.

Anyone who purchased the suspect meat is advised to return it to the store or discard it.
