Carer Consultant

St Vincent's Hospital

This is a Family-Carer-Supporter Lived/Living Experience Position – you must state in your cover letter having a Lived/Living Experience being a Family, Carer or Supporter (in your personal life) of someone with experience of mental health challenges and of accessing mental health services.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Director Lived Experience Workforce and Strategy and in collaboration with the Family-Carer-Supporter Advisory Committee, other Carer Consultant role and the Service as a whole, the Consultant assists in the improvement of the service’s responsiveness to family-carer-supporter needs and to communicate the broad views of family-carers-supporters to the mental health service and other relevant services. The Carer Consultant utilises co-production principles & the Carer Perspective to advocate for systemic changes that enable & ensure a carer; lens, perspective, and view, is included in service planning, delivery and implementation.


Classifications for this position will range from MP32 - MP35 Lived Experience Worker Level 2 Year 1 - 4 ($68,874 - $73,065 per annum pro rata



Your Contribution

  • Direct personal experience as a family member, carer, or supporter of a person with the lived experience of mental health challenges and of accessing mental health services. (It is preferred that the incumbent is not a Carer of a current or potential client of St. Vincent's Mental Health)
  • Broad understanding of the impact of mental health challenges on family-carers-supporters.
  • Good working knowledge of recovery oriented and strength-based practice in mental health
  • Working knowledge of systemic advocacy and how it differs to individual advocacy
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem-solving, conflict-resolving, and sound oral and writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of family-carers-supporters, staff, key stakeholders, and relevant committees.
  • An understanding of the diversity of the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our community, and the impact this has on consumers’ and families-carers-supporters’ experience of mental health challenges and the mental health system and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited day-to-day directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships whilst advocating for system change
  • Demonstrated skills in data collection and some understanding of program monitoring and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the health system or mental health system would be an advantage.
  • Experience in systemic advocacy and of working with Committees or Advisory Groups would be an advantage.
  • Experience in a Lived/Living Experience Workforce (LLEW) Role is desirable
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence
  • Basic competency with computers e.g. familiarity with word processing programs and email etc
  • Tertiary qualification in a social science or related discipline is desirable, or experience working in a recovery oriented mental health environment
  • Current National Criminal History Check, or willing to obtain
