Consultant Oncologist

The Role:
A position exists for a Staff Specialist Medical Oncologist to join a dedicated team.

Requirements include participation in a regular on-call roster for oncology, ward rounds, clinics, MDTs, student and junior doctor education and Specialist Outreach clinics in regional hospitals and other activities as per the needs of the Division and Department.

The Consultant would be encouraged to participate in quality activities for continuous service improvement and contribute to the enhancement of professional development within the team. It would be expected that the Consultant would be actively involved in teaching at all academic/non-academic levels.

Provide a specialist Medical Oncology service to include the care of both inpatient and ambulatory patients, within the Division of Medicine, regional hospitals, and remote communities; contribute to post graduate education, including the supervision of trainees.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Conduct regular inpatient ward rounds and outpatient sessions incorporating teaching and provide specialist opinion to referring medical practitioners.
2. Participate in provision of specialist outreach services to Regional Hospitals and regional and remote communities.
3. Provide care and advice on the management of patients with oncological conditions to colleagues both within and outside the specialty, and to those colleagues in geographically isolated centres in the Northern Territory.
4. Provide, with other members of the Division of Medicine, routine, and emergency after hours care on a roster basis.
5. Provide an after-hours consultancy service to colleagues and junior medical staff.
6. Direct, coordinate, supervise, manage, and evaluate the work of subordinate medical staff in the provision of patient care.
7. Participate in continuous medical education including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, professional development, peer review, research, teaching, quality improvement activities and clinical audits as appropriate.
8. Liaise with other medical, paramedical, and nursing staff and provide input into Unit and Hospital policies, for the ongoing development of specialist cancer services in the Northern Territory.
9. Participate and supervise Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities, review and revise policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with national and international recommendations.
10. Ensure there is a strategic approach to the development of contemporary human resource practices and policies including workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination, and a demonstrated commitment to their implementation.
11. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

The Hospital:
The Hospital has 360 beds, servicing a population of over 140,000 it is a diverse population including urban, regional, and remote centres, it is a teaching hospital and is co-located with the Private Hospital. A wide range of specialist services include Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Coronary Care, acute medical and surgical, Rehabilitation, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Mental Health.

Skills & Qualifications required:
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Current Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or eligibility for Fellowship.
3. Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high-quality service.
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment.
5. Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.
7. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research, and quality assurance activities.
8. Proven ability to manage self and others, monitor performance, manage change and develop policy with an understanding of EEO and WHS principles and policy.
9. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
