Deputy FEMO (Metropolitan) | Field Emergency Medical Officer

About the Role
Under the direction of the Executive Manager of the FEMO Program, the role is in the FEMO Program funded by the Department of Health (DoH) and is a key component of the overarching State Health Emergency Response Plan. It is intended that the FEMO take a lead role in the provision of responsive emergency prehospital medical care in the event of a mass casualty event. The Deputy FEMO position is available to assist in resourcing due to prolonged FEMO Program activation or when staffing becomes compromised by staff furloughing or extended leave.

In the event of a mass casualty incident:

  • In consultation with the Incident Health Commander (IHC) and Field Emergency Medical Coordinator (FEMC), determine the appropriate receiving hospital(s)
  • Provide clinical strategic advice to the HC
  • Provide advanced medical and clinical advice to paramedics
  • Assess the need for the activation of Victorian Medical Assistance Team(s) (VMAT(s))
  • Provide advanced medical care to casualties, as part of a forward medical team function

Classifications for this position will be dependent on years of Specialist experience.

Your Contribution

  • Legally qualified medical practitioner in Australia
  • Relevant medical specialist qualifications, e.g. FACEM, FANZCA, FCICM, with ongoing clinical currency
  • Currently fulfilling the requirements of a formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • A current Victorian Driver’s licence.
  • Understanding of medical practices as specifically applied to emergency response and management incidents and a demonstrated knowledge of current developments in the field
  • Knowledge of Emergency Management and Disaster Medicine principles
  • Current National criminal history check

About the FEMO Program
The program is funded by the Department of Health, to provide responsive emergency prehospital medical input in the event of a mass casualty event. The Program is a key component of the over-arching State Health Emergency Response Plan (SHERP). This job is based at St Vincent’s Fitzroy, Victoria.
