The Role:
We are seeking Emergency Medicine Registrars to work in the emergency department in a beautiful coastal region. Seeking applications commencing February 2022 for full-time and part-time positions. ACEM trainees.

You will be required to provide a high quality of clinical service to all hospital patients under the supervision of clinical supervisors including, Consultants and other senior staff within a multidisciplinary team. To work within your ability and according to the hospital’s core values. You will be expected to expand your knowledge and skills through the available learning opportunities.

This is an excellent opportunity to experience a wide variety of presentations in a regional setting. As an ED registrar you will get unrivalled exposure to real Emergency Medicine (Including procedures) within a fully supervised department.

There are opportunities for medical staff with critical care skills to be involved in inter-hospital transfers, including some via helicopter – only a very small minority of patients are transferred to tertiary care in Perth.

There is a successful teaching program for junior and middle level doctors led by several FACEMs who are passionate about teaching. Under the new (2022) ACEM Curriculum, the ED is accredited by ACEM for 24 months of ED training. In addition to the current collaboration with the University of Western Australia for Rural Clinical School for medical students, there are plans to develop this Regional Hospital into a teaching hub for rural generalists in WA. The planned re-development brings new opportunities for more staff, more space, and more teaching opportunities.

$131,853 - $176,734 p.a. pro rata (inclusive of base salary, 10% superannuation and applicable allowances)

Hospital:
This 171 bed Hospital has undergone an upgrade which includes the first ICU outside of the Metropolitan area, a comprehensive cancer care centre and an extended ED.

It’s an exciting time to be joining the Hospital with a $200 million transformation about to take place.

The opportunity to get involved at the ground level of the transformation is unique, with a bottom-up approach in system re-design informing the development of new infrastructure, such as a re-furbished emergency department, critical care services, theatre complex and general ward areas, along with new medical and surgical assessment units, and outpatient areas.

The hospital has a busy 24-hr emergency department, intensive care unit, general medical and surgical wards, paediatric ward, obstetric service, comprehensive general medical and geriatric service, acute psychiatric unit, theatre complex and outpatient areas.

The Emergency Department is the largest department in the hospital and the biggest Emergency Department in WA outside of Perth. The Department consists of 39 beds including Fast Track and Short Stay Unit. The Department receives more than 45,000 presentations per year of whom approximately 30% require admission. ED medical staff include Specialist Emergency Physicians, Senior Medical Practitioners, Registrars, Residents, and Interns.

Functioning as the regional centre for the Southwest and being the only Emergency Department in the area, it generates exposure to the whole spectrum of acute medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, gynaecological, and mental health related illness. The Emergency Department may assist with medical transfers for the recently established Rescue Helicopter.

Case mix, including acuity and activity is highly varied, with approximately 120 presentations per day. Our patients are younger than many tertiary sites with 25% being children. than many tertiary sites with 25% being children.

Skills/Quals:
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Demonstrated relevant clinical and procedural experience and/or specialty trainee registration.
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, carers, colleagues, and others involved in health services in order to facilitate the provision of high-quality health care.
4. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills to provide safe, timely patient care.
5. Demonstrated participation in continuing medical education activities to maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills.
6. Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality in healthcare through awareness of safe clinical practice within own limitations, and continuous improvement of patient outcomes.
7. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of culturally appropriate care.
8. Experience of or interest in experiencing health service delivery and patient care in rural setting.
9. Demonstrated understanding of the difference in service delivery between metropolitan and rural medicine
10. Demonstrated ability to provide education, supervision, training, and support to more junior staff.
