General Practitioner - Asylum Seeker Health Services

Cabrini Health

Cabrini Outreach

Cabrini Outreach is a Catholic community development organisation inspired by the spirit and vision of Mother Cabrini and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our mandate is to seek social justice, alleviate social inequality and enable better healthcare for people seeking asylum and people experiencing disadvantage within Australia and overseas. Visit our website for the organisations mission, values, journey and strategic direction.

Primary Care Connect
Primary Care Connect is a local community health service operating under the social model of health. We work with our community to create better health and wellbeing outcomes. We are regarded as a community health service that engages well with vulnerable and hard to reach community groups. We have over 25 programs focusing on a range of health and wellbeing issues and we pride ourselves on providing person centred and consumer driven care that allows people to take control of their lives and bring about change. Visit our website for the organisations mission, values, journey and strategic direction.

The partnership has established a new primary care service called Clinic Sihat based at Primary Care Connect in Shepparton.

About the role
Cabrini Outreach in partnership with Primary Care Connect is seeking a General Practitioner who is passionate about working with people seeking asylum and refugees to join the Clinic Sihat team. The role is part-time for one day per fortnight, so would suit a GP who is interested in a new challenge in their career whilst maintaining substantive work at another GP practice. Contractual employment is with Cabrini Outreach and it is a salaried position.

Clinic Sihat is a nurse-led clinic, and the GP is responsible for providing direct clinical care to clients working closely with the nursing team. Support and referral pathways are also available within the broader Primary Care Connect programs, including but not limited to, the refugee health program and torture and trauma services.

The primary target groups attending the service are people seeking asylum who are Medicare-ineligible and those who have Medicare but limited or no income, as well as newly arrived refugees. We provide integrated primary care and along with a health waiver program (for medications, glasses and other medical aids). Our clients typically have complex physical and mental health needs and exposure to traumatic experiences, exacerbated by prolonged periods of uncertainty regarding their migration status and time in immigration detention. Clients are bulkbilled and for those with no Medicare the service is provided free of charge.

About you
You will be a dynamic and motivated Medical Practitioner who has successfully completed the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) training program or otherwise meet the requirements for Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) and is eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and have at least 2 years clinical experience in a general practice or primary health environment.

You will also have:

  • Previous experience working in complex health settings (eg with asylum seekers and refugees), liaising with multiple stakeholders in health and community settings (highly desirable
  • Ability to work autonomously under limited supervision, exercising sound professional judgement and seeking advice and consultation when appropriate
  • Experience in providing clear clinical advice and support to colleagues
