About the Department
St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health, mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.
About the Role
The Community Medical Practitioner has responsibility for providing quality primary care medical services in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The Community Medical Practitioner provides best practice patient care in a multidisciplinary custodial environment to the male prisoner population at Port Phillip Prison with a range of acute and chronic medical needs.
1 x Part Time Role available (24 Hours per week)
The positions are remunerated according to the successful applicant’s years of experience and qualifications against the relevant Award/EBA.

You have a comprehensive understanding of the health needs for prisoner populations, including knowledge of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and homelessness. You are a team player and a respectful and professional person who demonstrates a high level of moral values, interpersonal and influencing skills and strives to deliver consistency in all that you do. You possess attributes including resilience, integrity and the ability to think on your feet.
Duties
- Provide medical consultation sessions as rostered.
- Delivery of high quality, patient oriented clinical services, including assisting the Medical Director in the development and implementation of relevant policies and procedures.
- Participation in case discussions regarding patient care as required
- Participation in on-call roster
- Effective liaison is established and maintained with Department of Justice (Justice Health), Department of Human Services and a broad range of community-based agencies
- Participate in the maintenance of high quality service provision, a quality improvement plan and evaluation criteria for the services activities that meet the standards of the ACHS and other relevant bodies.
- Compliance with all documentation requirements of the health service
- Assist in mentor/preceptorship of all new medical staff
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
- Registration with APHRA
- Post graduate specialisation in General Practice: Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or Fellowship with The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine is highly desirable
- Evidence of ongoing CME participation
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Demonstrated experience in primary care or general practice
- Knowledge of and a commitment to continuous quality improvement
