Nurse RN - Walwa

RWAV

  • Flexible part-time hours, 2 days with at least 2 nights on-call per week, plus at least 1:3 weekend on-call
  • Diverse role - district and community nursing, practice nurse support and palliative care
  • $50 per hour plus salary packaging, post grad allowance $1.30-2.20 per hour plus $7.50 per on-call rate (Inc of up to 1 hour return to work & over 1 hour paid at 3 hours of penalty rate) 
  • Possibility to gain extra hours with Corryong health service (lower grade)
  • Car when on-call
  • Supervision and support from Nurse practitioner
  • Remote Area Nurse training
  • Extensive orientation provided

This is a rare opportunity to work in a very diverse role for this predominantly agricultural and forestry rural community. From supporting the GPs in the medical centre to providing first response to emergencies. This role encompasses all emergency, district and community nursing as well as palliative care. Undertaking minor procedural work, dealing with chronic disease and disabilities to community visits. There is also the opportunity to engage in health promotion work - running info sessions, writing articles for local radio and immersing yourself in the community as well as continuous improvement and accreditation work.

You will be extremely well supported in this role by a dedicated close knit team of clinical, medical and administrative staff who work together well as a team to improve healthcare for their local community. The role will demand excellent communication and time management skills,as well as solid experience in a rural or remote setting with emergency and district nursing skills. You will be required to use your initiative, develop and utilise your problem solving skills and have the ability to liaise and build rapport within the local community whilst providing client centred care.

Essential Key requirements:
  • Registered Nurse Division 1
  • Holding or working towards a tertiary qualification in nursing or a related discipline.
  • Current driver’s license and access to own vehicle.
  • High level of self-motivation and the ability to initiate and implement programs consistent with a primary health care philosophy.
  • A minimum of 5 years post graduate experience, preferable in rural or remote setting
  • Accident and emergency experience
  • Community and population health experience/and or qualification
  • Advanced assessment skills
  • Police check
  • Current RANEG accreditation (or preparedness to work towards)
  • Excellent written, verbal and report writing skills, computer skills and competency with the Windows operating system
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sound understanding of the principals of health promotion, community capacity building and community development

 Desirable:
  • A qualification specific to the provision of health promotion, community development and community capacity building or preparedness to attain same.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and the accreditation process.
  • Prior experience and/or qualifications in aged care.
  • Prior experience and or qualification in community and population health.
  • Interest and sound understanding of the principles of primary health care, community development, community consultation and health promotion.

The Walwa Bush Nursing Centre is joined with an accredited purpose-built solo teaching medical practice and is one of the few dispensing practices in Victoria. This partnership enables a focus on preventive medicine, population and community health by providing direct access to many services including practice nursing services, district nursing, home and community care, visiting physiotherapist, diabetes educator, podiatrist, mental health counselor, child and maternal health care nurse, massage therapy, occupational therapist and dietitian, meals on wheels, community car, health education and assessment, continuum of care as well as health promotion programs such as weight training, Tai Chi for arthritis, weight reduction classes a community centre with gymnasium. 

24 hour Accident and Emergency department (staffed 24/7 by highly trained WBNC nurses and Nurse Practitioner) for first response emergencies, nursing support during business hours. An Ambulance Victoria auspiced Community Emergency Response Team is also rostered 24/7 . The catchment population is variable as many travel from surrounding towns to access care in Walwa due to the comprehensive care and availability of other services. It is a rapidly aging population with high levels of chronic disease but the age range can be from 3-100 years.

About Walwa: Lovely little town close to ski fields with plenty of outdoor activities. The unique wilderness areas, lakes and rivers are popular with bush walkers, campers, canoeists, skiers, whitewater rafters and fishing enthusiasts. Situated in a beautiful setting close to the Snowy Mountains and the Kosciuszko National Park. The town boasts a pub, resort , gallery and general store and provides many community events. Corryong and Tumbarumba are a 30-minute drive away and offer bigger supermarkets and other shopping. Walwa is only one hour drive from the larger regional centres of Albury-Wodonga.
