Now is a particularly exciting and challenging time for nursing and midwifery education, research and practice.

Globally there are workforce shortages for skilled health professionals, increased patient acuity, decrease in patients’ length of stay in acute facilities, greater need for community-based services and growing community concern and expectations for health care quality and safety. With this in mind, Sydney Nursing School’s programs are innovative, creative, proactive and responsive to these local and global needs.

When I joined the Faculty in January 2008, I became a part of an institution which has played a very important and pioneering role in nursing and midwifery education in Australia, and the development of nursing and midwifery within the higher education sector. I am pleased to be involved in the continuation of this spirit of innovation and development today.

There are many reasons why we attract students both locally and internationally. We offer an excellent range of nursing programs designed to prepare students for leadership in clinical practice, research, teaching and administration. They have the opportunity to study from pre-registration level right through to the Doctor of Philosophy. We also offer research, research training and consultancy in midwifery. All our students are taught by a strong group of academics and clinical experts, many of whom are renowned both nationally and internationally as practising nurses, midwives, teachers and researchers.

The University of Sydney is a research intensive university. Here at Sydney Nursing School we are committed to developing our research, which informs our education processes and in turn leads to improved patient experience. Our reputation in research is growing significantly.

We provide a great experience for our students, within a really collegial, stimulating and supportive environment. Additionally, our School has excellent relationships with other health faculties, health industry, professional associations, government and the community. These links contribute to inter-professional practice and policy development, research collaborations and great learning experiences for students and staff.

Nursing and midwifery are two of the most trusted professions. Nurses care for patients and their families, and have the capacity to influence future trends in treatment, patient care and disease prevention. Midwives work closely with women right through to childbirth and beyond, to achieve optimum results for mothers and babies.
