Become an Aboriginal Cultural Consultant – Lead Cultural Safety, Strength, and Connection in Forensic Mental Health

Are you an experienced Registered Nurse, Allied Health Professional or Administrative Professional who thrives on meaningful connection, cultural leadership, and supporting social and emotional wellbeing? The Division of Forensic Mental Health (FMH) is seeking two part-time and passionate Aboriginal Cultural Consultants (ACC) to guide and strengthen culturally responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, patients, their families, and community.

As an ACC, you’ll step into a pivotal cultural leadership role - one that brings together your expertise, lived understanding, and ability to navigate complexity with compassion and confidence. You’ll work closely with Aboriginal consumers and families, often in sensitive and challenging circumstances, helping ensure they feel culturally safe, heard, and supported throughout their forensic mental health journey.

Your impact will extend across FMH as you:

• build and maintain trusted relationships with the NALHN Aboriginal Health Division, community partners, advocates, other health services, and stakeholders
• support staff to deepen their cultural awareness and understanding, strengthening the cultural safety of the entire service
• provide expert cultural advice across multidisciplinary and interagency teams
• lead and contribute to service development, training, education, and continuous improvement
• help shape a system that consistently delivers high-quality, culturally responsive care

You’ll play a crucial role in ensuring NALHN FMH delivers services that truly meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - balancing cultural knowledge, strategic insight, mentorship, and advocacy.

To be eligible for this position at ASO6 classification, you must hold a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice or Community Care) or equivalent.

To be eligible for this position at AHP2 classification, you must hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification for one of the following Allied Health disciplines working in the service, specifically:

• Occupational Therapist - Appropriate Degree or equivalent qualification which entitles registration as an Occupational Therapist with Occupational Therapy Australia
• Psychologist - Appropriate Degree or equivalent qualification recognised by the PsyBA and general registration with PsyBA
• Social Worker – Appropriate Degree or equivalent which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers

To be eligible for this position at RN2A classification, you must be registered as a Nurse by the Nursing/Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and who holds a current practicing certificate. Must be enrolled in an approved mental health course or hold a qualification in mental health practice.

About You:
Success in this role calls for an experienced and culturally knowledgeable professional with a strong commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal consumers in forensic and mental health settings. You will bring a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, customs and practices, and can confidently apply this knowledge to inform culturally safe care, service design and clinical decisionmaking.
You have demonstrated experience working alongside Aboriginal consumers, families and communities, and excel at building respectful, collaborative relationships across diverse professional and organisational environments. Your strengths include analysing complex issues, developing innovative and holistic solutions, managing projects and initiatives within set timeframes, and contributing to service planning and workforce development.
Equally, you are a confident communicator and educator who can deliver cultural training to health professionals, work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, and operate with autonomy under minimal supervision. Your approach is flexible, creative and solutionsfocused, supported by strong problemsolving, negotiation and conflictresolution skills.
Your experience includes facilitating consumer and community participation, supporting program development and evaluation, and delivering services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within mental health and related health settings.
