About the Role
The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Service is a value-add service with two primary functions:
- To provide support to and advocacy on behalf of First Nations patients, as requested by patients themselves.
- To provide culturally specific secondary consultation to clinicians.
The AHLO works with other SVHM staff to provide culturally appropriate care for First Nations patients and families, to improve access to care, experiences of care, and health outcomes. The AHLO provides this cultural support in-line with a work prioritisation tool, which sets out the scope of duties.
Classifications for this position will range from classification range XV13 - ON14 ($72,680 - $90,417 per annum).
Your Contribution
- Minimum requirement - Certificate IV or Diploma level qualifications in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, or Aboriginal Health Worker Certificate IV, or other qualifications in health or mental health care, or in Community Development. Or a willingness to obtain.
- Of Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander descent – this is an identified position in accordance with the Equal Opportunity Act (2010)
- Experience in First Nations health care (note: mental health care experience would be an advantage)
- Demonstrated understanding of the Victorian health system and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
- Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain.

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer will be based at the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) Fitzroy campus and report into First Nations Services and ALERT. First Nations Services drives self-determination, co-design and cultural safety for First Nations people across the organisation through policy reform, improvement projects, consultation, and cultural support for staff and patients. First Nations identified positions exist across the breadth of the organisation, but are linked through the strategic vision and cultural support of First Nations Services.
