About the Department

St Vincent’s BreastScreen aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality due to breast cancer through the early detection of the disease. The program adheres to the values of St Vincent’s health which reflect the mission of BreastScreen Victoria to strive for excellence, collaboration, access, acceptability and improvements in detection and treatment of breast cancer.



About the Role

The Nurse Counsellor will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to offer both nursing and counselling support and information, to women and their significant others attending St. Vincent’s BreastScreen. You will provide an integral discipline within the BreastScreen multidisciplinary team, which also encompasses surgery, pathology and radiography. You will also be responsible for assisting with diagnostic procedures, providing brief counselling and support to women and their significant others, and booking women into clinics.



Classifications for this position will range from YP3 - YP9 ($69,253.60 - $92,601.60 pro rata per annum).

Duties

  • Provide relevant information to assist the women in understanding the recall and assessment process, to help them make informed choices and to assist them in decision making concerning their care
  • Obtain informed and written consent from clients prior to assessment, with the use of interpreters as requested
  • Assist with clinical procedures (eg. fine needle aspiration, ultrasound, and stereotactic core biopsies)
  • Ensure correct supplies of equipment, drugs and linen are ordered and stocked
  • Communicates effectively with the team, senior staff, and management to keep staff informed about matters pertaining to the team’s functioning



Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication skills with the ability to work effectively and with the multidisciplinary team
  • You must be committed to and your own professional development Degree in general nursing which meets the registration requirements of AHPRA
  • Current AHPRA Registration
  • Experience and knowledge of women’s health issues and practice
  • Knowledge of issues associated with screening, assessment and a diagnosis of breast cancer
  • Knowledge of principles of quality assurance
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Breast Care Nursing (non-essential)
