Clinical Nurse - Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic

About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated nurse to join St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne's Health Independence Program (HIP) as an Intrathecal Baclofen Clinical Nurse (ITB CN).

This senior clinical nursing role combines advanced clinical practice with service development and quality improvement, supporting adults living with complex spasticity who receive Intrathecal Baclofen (ITB) therapy. Working closely with the ITB Rehabilitation Physician and multidisciplinary team, you will provide expert clinical assessment, care coordination, patient education and procedural support, while contributing to the ongoing development and sustainability of this specialist service. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop highly specialised expertise in spasticity management and play a key role in shaping the future delivery of the Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic.

Classification: ZA7 – ZA8 ($68 - $69 per hour).

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Support

  • Provide advanced nursing assessment, care coordination and clinical management for adults receiving Intrathecal Baclofen therapy.
  • Support the ITB Rehabilitation Physician during outpatient clinics and procedural appointments.
  • Interrogate, program, plan and refill Intrathecal Baclofen pumps following appropriate training, credentialing and approved scope of practice.
  • Deliver education, support and clinical advice to patients, carers and relevant healthcare providers.
  • Facilitate safe, effective and patient-centred management of individuals living with complex spasticity.

Service Development and Quality Improvement

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and optimisation of the Clinical Nurse role within the ITB service.
  • Support service planning, sustainability and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the review and maintenance of contemporary, evidence-based clinical guidelines, pathways and the ITB Management Manual.
  • Contribute to data collection, service evaluation and quality improvement activities.
  • Support compliance with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards and Health Independence Program priorities.

Your Contribution

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A nursing qualification that meets the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in the management of complex spasticity.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary and inter-professional healthcare teams.
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication and patient education skills.
  • Current National Criminal History Check, or willingness to obtain.

The following will be highly regarded:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant specialty area.
  • Experience managing Intrathecal Baclofen pumps.
  • Experience within rehabilitation, neurological or procedural services.

About the Health Independence Program – Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic

The Health Independence Program (HIP) incorporates Subacute Ambulatory Care Services (SACS), Complex Care Services and the North Richmond Community Health Post-Acute Care Program. The Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic forms part of the Disability Stream, alongside the Young Adults with Complex Disabilities Service and Polio Services Victoria. The clinic provides specialist assessment and management for adults living with severe spasticity, predominantly individuals with Cerebral Palsy who utilise Intrathecal Baclofen pumps to manage their condition. Based at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne – Bolte Wing, the service delivers highly specialised care that supports function, comfort and quality of life for people with complex neurological disabilities.
