Head of Department General Medicine
Lead the development of medical services in a brand-new regional hospital
An exceptional opportunity is available for an experienced General Physician to lead the Department of Medicine within a major new hospital opening on the beautiful Southern New South Wales coast in 2027.

Larger than the regions two existing hospitals combined, this purpose-built facility will deliver expanded, contemporary services to a growing community. This is a rare opportunity to help shape a new department, influence models of care and establish a strong clinical culture from the outset.

The opportunity
As Head of Department General Medicine, you will provide the clinical leadership, vision and strategic direction required to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred medical services.
Working collaboratively with senior executives, clinicians and multidisciplinary teams, you will:

• Lead the strategic and operational development of the Department of Medicine
• Help design and implement contemporary models of care for the new hospital
• Promote clinical excellence, accountability and positive patient outcomes
• Provide professional leadership, mentoring and support across the department
• Oversee clinical governance, quality assurance and service-improvement initiatives
• Support workforce planning, recruitment and performance management
• Foster education, supervision, research and continuing professional development
• Build effective relationships with patients, families and internal and external stakeholders
• Participate in the relevant on-call roster and provide timely on-site clinical support
• Help establish an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing departmental culture

While individual responsibilities may be delegated to other senior clinicians, the Head of Department will retain oversight of the departments performance, outputs and outcomes.

About you
You will be an accomplished senior medical practitioner with:

• Specialist registration, or eligibility for specialist registration, with AHPRA
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in General and Acute Care Medicine, or an equivalent recognised qualification
• A demonstrated record of clinical excellence and successful medical leadership
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and complex clinical services
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
• A commitment to clinical governance, patient safety and continuous improvement
• An active interest in teaching, supervision, research and workforce development
• High levels of professionalism and a commitment to respectful, inclusive healthcare
• Willingness to participate in the departmental on-call roster
