Islet Transplant Diabetes Educator

    About the Role

    • This role is for a Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educator working as part of the Diabetes Education team, providing Diabetes Education to all patients with diabetes at St Vincent's Public Hospital Melbourne.
    • The allocated portfolio for this position will mainly focus on type 1 diabetes patients who are referred for inclusion in the Islet Cell Transplantation Programme
    • The position's objective is to deliver high quality diabetes care and education to the patients and staff of STV and to deliver care which meets the standards of nursing practice.
    • You will be required to function as part of the multidisciplinary team and demonstrate an interest in professional development and to collaborate with other staff members supporting improvements in the nursing management of people with diabetes.
    • The role will adhere to the Australian Diabetes Educators Australia (ADEA) national standards of practice for credentialled diabetes educators in providing diabetes education in clinical care, research, policy development, service planning and development.


    Classifications for this position will be ZJ4 ​($113,646.00 pro rata per annum)


    Working with the endocrine team to provide education ensuring patient understanding of glycaemic management.



    This portfolio will focus on pre and post islet cell transplantation.

    • To provide assessment of patients referred to diabetes education team.
    • Participate in a multidisciplinary HCP team who meet and oversee patient selection / inclusion into Islet Transplantation program.
    • Assist in evaluation of current technology used by patients to achieve glycaemic targets.
    • Display a willingness to develop self and seek to improve performance.
    • Encourage innovation within the wider team.
    • Use highly developed strategic skills to lead Quality Improvement and best practice initiatives.
    • Ability to work both autonomously as well as a team member.
    • Prioritisation of workload and the ability to meet deadlines as determined by team & manager.
    • Maintain Good Clinical Practice and Therapeutic Goods Guidelines and other applicable regulatory requirements.


    Your Contribution

    • AHPRA Registered Nurse
    • Post Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Management
    • Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) together with (at least) five (5) years full time equivalent post graduate
    • Demonstrated data management and computer literacy to provide accurate information for writing of reports publications and presentations at local, national and international levels.
    • Completed Diabetes Credentialing with at minimum of 5 years full time equivalent experience and demonstrates the ability to manage type 1 diabetes with high clinical needs including unstable diabetes with and severe hypoglycaemia unawareness
    • Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain

    The Diabetes Education department is part of the Endocrine & Diabetes Unit located within the Daly Wing of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne in Fitzroy. The Diabetes Education department works as part of a multidisciplinary team along with Diabetes Research and Endocrine Testing.
