About the Role
Mental Health Rotation
St Vincent's offers a unique and personalized Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program that provides the opportunity for a long and fulfilling career in mental health. During your graduate year you will have the opportunity to learn and develop your skills in a supportive environment, working closely with your preceptor and the opportunity to participate in group supervision.
- All graduates will have an opportunity to rotate to different areas of the service – subject to clinical need and skill mix.
- Rotations include: the Adult Acute Inpatient Unit, Depaul House, Group Program, Footbridge CCU, Clarendon and Hawthorn Community Clinics & Normanby Aged Adult Inpatient Unit.
- You will be required to work a rotating roster, including night shift.
- These positions are 0.8 FTE with regular funded study days
- You will be trained in the use of key recovery tools, and will be encouraged to develop your own creative recovery-orientated care strategies and you will work with our Lived Experience workforce.
- The graduate nurse will participate in the mandatory academic training program that has been specifically designed to assist the graduate to develop their skills and knowledge in relation to mental health nursing over 12 months.

Blended Mental Health / Emergency Department Rotation
In addition to the above, St Vincent’s also offers an opportunity to rotate through the Emergency Department. The Mental Health and Emergency (MH/ED) Blended Graduate Nurse Program is a specialised program designed to support newly registered nurses to develop foundational clinical skills, confidence, and professional capability across both Acute Mental Health and Emergency care settings. Commencing in January each year, the program provides graduates with rotational experience in Mental Health Services and the Emergency Department, supporting skill development at the interface of mental health and acute care.
During this rotation, graduates will provide care for a diverse range of adult clinical presentations including care of critically unwell and deteriorating patients, acute medical and surgical conditions, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, palliative care, and correctional health. Graduates will be supported by senior nursing staff and the multidisciplinary team to provide care and compassion to socially vulnerable and marginalised people in the community, and promote incorporation of social justice and advocacy into evidence-based clinical practice to ensure that all patients receive the best possible care.
Graduates will rotate through the different areas of ED, including the acute cubicles, short stay units, MHAOD Hub and Fast Tract to complete learning objectives and consolidate emergency nursing knowledge and clinical skills.
Duties include:
- Deliver holistic nursing care addressing the physical, emotional, and mental health needs of consumers/patients across Mental Health and Emergency settings.
- Provide recovery-oriented, trauma-informed care in Mental Health services in alignment with the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2013).
- Safely administer medications and assist with medical and diagnostic procedures
- Liaise effectively with consumers/patients, families, medical staff, and allied health professionals to support coordinated care.
- Participate in consumer assessment, care planning, therapeutic activities, and discharge planning alongside the multi-disciplinary team.
- Facilitate effective admission, transfer, and discharge processes
- Apply relevant legislative requirements, including the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022.
Classifications for these positions will be Registered Psychiatric Nurse Grade 2 NP11 ($81, 733 per annum pro rata); or YP2 if in the Emergency Department rotation.

About St Vincent’s Mental Health
St Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) provides high quality, recovery-oriented services across an adult area mental health service for the inner-city areas of Yarra and Boroondara. The service utilises the Strengths Model of recovery and this is embedded across all parts of the mental health service. In addition, the Acute Inpatient Service utilises the Safewards Model. St Vincent’s is also committed to the ongoing development of a strong peer support workforce.
About St Vincent’s Emergency Department
The Emergency Department is a dynamic and fast paced environment that comprises 49 treatment spaces where patients receive care. The St Vincent’s Emergency Department consists of two resuscitation bays, 16 acute cubicles, 5 fast track chairs and 15 Emergency short stay beds. In addition to this, there is a behavioural assessment room, procedure and a plaster room. 2 triage assessment areas, and a three-chair diagnostic lounge support patient flow into the department.
The ED opened the Andrew Dent Mental Health and AOD Hub in 2021. The Hub consists of a multidisciplinary team which brings together clinicians from mental health, drug and alcohol and the ED care coordination team, who provides specialised care to patients presenting to the ED with high acuity mental health and AOD issues, and/or complex psychosocial needs.

- Curriculum vitae/resume (maximum of 3 pages).
- Academic transcript to date, with results legend.
- 2x copies of your most recent clinical placement/ANSAT reports.
- Reports must be sent in their entirety and not selected parts or pages.
- If your reports are paper based, they will need to be certified (electronic placement reports do not need certification).
- Preferably one of your reports should be from your most recent mental health placement, unless you have not completed this yet.
- If you are applying for the Blended MH/ED rotation, please ensure your second report from is your most recent acute placement

Additional Information Required:
- The name and details of two referees (one must be a Clinical Teacher, Preceptor or a senior nurse to whom you have recently reported to in mental health).
- Ensure you inform your referee of your intention to list them.
- All components of the application are considered when shortlisting applicants for interview. Notification for interview will be via email.
Step 2 - Attending an Interview
- All our graduate interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams, and are in a group interview format.
- If your application is successful, and you are offered an interview, we will give you more information regarding the interview process at that time.
There will be two interviews:
First group interview – conducted 28th July – 12th August
- 5 minutes to answer a question related to a clinical placement experience, St Vincent’s values or inspiration for mental health or general nursing.
- Within this interview it is important that you inform us of your preferences for rotations e.g. if you would like to be considered for the Blended ED/MH rotation, the 12-month Mental Health rotation, or both. This will determine which interview questions you are asked in the second group interview.
- If you are successful in moving to the second group interview, you will be informed before the 18th of August.
Second group interview – conducted 18th August – 3rd September
- 50-minute group interview containing 6 questions
- Post this interview, we will not be in contact until the PMCV Results have been released.
Step 3 - Outcome of PMCV GNMP Match
PMCV GNMP Match results will be released on Wednesday 16th of September 2026.
If you are successfully matched to St Vincent’s Hospital you will be contacted by phone after the results have been released.
