Nurse Consultant – Epilepsy Nurse

The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to the community. As part of this commitment, we are introducing a specialised Nurse Consultant role focused on epilepsy care within our Neurology epilepsy outpatient service.
 
This position will provide advanced clinical expertise, leadership, and coordination of services for people living with epilepsy, ensuring timely access to care, improved patient outcomes, and enhanced support for families and caregivers.
 
About the Role:
The Nurse Consultant – Epilepsy Nurse is an expert clinical role responsible for leading and delivering specialised nursing care for patients with epilepsy across inpatient and outpatient settings.
 
Working with a high degree of autonomy, the Nurse Consultant will:

• Conduct nurse-led epilepsy clinics, including assessment and management of first seizures and ongoing care for known patients.
• Act as a single point of contact for patients, families, and GPs, reducing unnecessary hospital visits and improving continuity of care.
• Provide rapid assessment and intervention for patients presenting with breakthrough seizures in the Emergency Department to facilitate early discharge and avoid admission.
• Develop and adjust treatment plans for both inpatients and outpatients, and coordinate investigations as required.
• Deliver education and consultation services to nursing, medical, and allied health staff, as well as caregivers, to promote best practice in epilepsy management.
• Lead the coordination of pre-surgical workup for patients being considered for epilepsy surgery.
• Support epilepsy services for the SA Intellectual Disability Health Service.
• Contribute to workforce development through education and training for undergraduate and registered nurses.
• Participate in research, quality improvement initiatives, and service redesign to ensure evidence-based care.

About You:
You are an experienced and highly skilled Registered Nurse with a passion for improving outcomes for people living with epilepsy. You bring advanced clinical knowledge, leadership capability, and a commitment to evidence-based practice. You thrive in a role that combines autonomy with collaboration and are confident in making complex clinical decisions within a multidisciplinary team environment.
 
To succeed in this role, you will have:

• Current registration or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate.
• At least three years of post-registration experience, with demonstrated expertise in neurology or epilepsy care.
• Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills, including the ability to develop and adjust treatment plans.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with patients, families, GPs, and health professionals.
• Proven ability to lead education initiatives and mentor nursing staff.
• A commitment to continuous learning, research, and quality improvement.
• Highly developed organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage competing demands. 

Desirable attributes include postgraduate qualifications in a relevant specialty, experience in coordinating complex care pathways (such as epilepsy surgery workup), and familiarity with quality improvement methodologies.

Our Local Health Network Sites and Services:
Lyell McEwin Hospital – The major hospital in the north and north-east for emergency care, complex and multi-day surgery, medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics and outpatient services.
 
Modbury Hospital – A general hospital with emergency care, elective surgery, medicine, outpatient and sub-acute services, rehabilitation, geriatric and palliative care.
 
Mental Health - The Division of Mental Health provides a comprehensive range of public mental health services for youth, adults and older people in northern Adelaide. Services are provided through community health centres and hospitals, and to consumers in their own homes. 
 
Forensic Mental Health - A statewide service that operates as part of the Division of Mental Health for forensic patients and prisoners. 
 
Community Sites - Elizabeth GP Plus, Modbury GP Plus and Gilles Plains GP Plus Super Clinics providing community based care.
