THE COMPANY

This organisation provides specialist mental health services for young people aged 15 to 25 in the western and north-western regions of metropolitan Melbourne. They focus on early intervention for severe and complex mental illnesses, offering comprehensive, individually tailored care through multidisciplinary teams. Their services include assessment, crisis intervention, case management, psychological support, inpatient care, and outreach programs. They also run a Forensic Youth Mental Health Service and support health professionals through training and consultation to enhance community-based youth mental health care.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Clinical Stream Lead and Director of Nursing, The Nurse Practitioner provides advanced mental health care to young people aged 12-25 in custody. The role aims to improve mental health outcomes and reduce re-offending by delivering evidence-based assessment, treatment, and case management. The position operates within a multidisciplinary team across 2 locations, ensuring a holistic and integrated approach to care, including collaboration with custodial and community services.

Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing and prescribing treatments, facilitating referrals, and providing clinical leadership and supervision. The Nurse Practitioner will also contribute to service development, policy implementation, and the promotion of evidence-based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed practices. Essential skills for this role include advanced clinical mental health nursing, case management, strategic leadership, and effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse Div. 1, Post graduate qualification(s) in Mental Health, NMBA approved Masters for Nurse Practitoiner qualification
  • Min 2 years of advance clinical nursing experience in a forensic mental health setting
  • Understanding of the NMBA Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skills in the principals of working with mental health patients who have addiction/AOD issues.
  • A commitment to improving health outcomes for mental health consumers with a dual diagnosis.
  • Well-developed knowledge and understanding of the public mental health service environment, the Mental
    Health and Well-being Act (2022), Health Records Act (2001), Privacy Act (1998), Child Well-being and Safety
    Act (2005), and other relevant legislation, policies and strategic directions.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the Child Safe Standards (2022) and Reportable Conduct Scheme
  • Understanding of the Child, Youth & Families Act (CYFA) (2005) which is the principal legislation for the
    youth justice service.
  • Understanding of the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act (1997) and other Acts/
    legislation relevant to working with young people in a mental health setting (i.e. Sentencing Act, 1991).
