Registered Nurse - Surgical Cardiac

ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE:
We are looking for an experienced Cardiac Nurse to join our General Surgical Ward. In this role, you will be responsible for providing specialised nursing care for patients recovering from cardiac interventions, including angiograms, stent insertions, and other procedures. You will be responsible for monitoring and managing patients' cardiac status, including telemetry, and ensuring safe and effective recovery in a fast-paced environment. The ward operates on a rotating roster, requiring all staff to work morning (AM), afternoon (PM), and night (ND) shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive post-operative care for patients following cardiac interventions, such as angiograms and stent insertions.
  • Monitor patients using telemetry to assess heart rhythm, rate, and other vital signs, ensuring early detection of any abnormalities or changes in condition.
  • Manage and maintain TR bands (Transradial access site compression) for patient's post-cardiac catheterisation to prevent complications.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments, including IV medications and fluids, ensuring correct dosages and monitoring for adverse effects.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including cardiologists and surgeons, to develop and implement individualised care plans for cardiac patients.
  • Assess and monitor patients’ cardiac status, including blood pressure, heart rate, and ECG readings, providing timely interventions when necessary.
  • Educate patients and families on post-operative care, including activity restrictions, lifestyle changes, and cardiac health management.
  • Ensure that all documentation related to patient care is accurate and up-to-date, complying with hospital protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to changes in a patient’s condition, particularly in emergency cardiac situations.
  • Provide compassionate, patient-centered care, promoting a comfortable and healing environment for patients recovering from cardiac procedures.

ABOUT YOU:

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Current AHPRA with proven experience in cardiac nursing or post-operative care.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in telemetry monitoring and the ability to interpret heart rhythms, ECGs, and other telemetry data.
  • Competence in using TR bands and managing post-cardiac catheterization care.
  • Ability to recognise and respond to changes in cardiac status, including arrhythmias, hypotension, and other complications.
  • Solid understanding of post-cardiac intervention care, including managing medications, monitoring fluid balance, and ensuring optimal recovery.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to manage complex cardiac cases and make informed decisions quickly.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to educate patients and collaborate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, handling multiple patients and tasks simultaneously.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification is desired.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
