About the Role
You will provide psychiatric nursing services to the medical inpatient population at Port Phillip Prison within the St Johns unit. Principally this position involves patient risk assessment and management including crisis, develop risk management plans, treatment management, assessment of ongoing need for review, and engage the patient in developing their mental health recovery plans, referrals, discharge planning and liaising with external stakeholders. - You will undertake comprehensive health screening of all Inter-prison transfers to PPP including risk status and development of risk management plans were appropriate
- Provide high quality care to all patients and undertake mental state examinations
- Respond to mental health changes in patient’s conditions and initiate consultations with relevant medical/nursing and multidisciplinary team as required
- Ensure accurate documentation within the electronic medical file is comprehensive and is completed in accordance with JCare training and business rules for reporting processes. Identify the on-going support and treatment needs of people with a psychiatric illness. This would include comprehensive secondary referral to FMHS if required
Classifications for this position NP81 - NP83 ($100,932.00 - $108,435.60 per annum, pro rata).
Your Contribution - Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Nursing that meets the requirements of the
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - Current Practicing Certificate
- Post registration qualification in relevant area of specialty – Mental Health
- A minimum of 5 years’ post graduate Registered Psychiatric Nurse experience
- Advanced clinical nursing skills
- Ability to be available for on-call/re-call that requires attendance within a 2 hour time frame

About St John's
St John’s, the service’s 20 bed subacute unit, delivers specialised support within the correctional environment. The prison is located in Truganina, approximately 20 km west of Melbourne.
SVCHS works in partnership with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS), who provide secondary mental health care for individuals with diagnosed mental illness.
The Psychiatric Nurse will operate within the primary psychiatric service at St John’s. This role is responsible for delivering high quality primary mental health care, responding to risk, conducting assessments, supporting unwell individuals to ensure their mental health needs are met and coordinating referrals to FMHS for secondary mental health services when required.
