About Victorian Transcultural Mental Health (VTMH)
VTMH is a statewide service focused on capacity building in order to strengthen cultural responsiveness in public mental health and wellbeing services. We hope our work supports equitable access and delivery of mental health and wellbeing services that uphold dignity, human rights, inclusion, and social justice. VTMH is funded by the Victorian Department of Health and sits as a statewide specialist unit within St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.
For over 30 years, VTMH has played an important role in supporting mental health and wellbeing organisations and workers to respond to the needs of Victoria’s increasingly diverse communities. Our work emerged from a growing recognition that people’s identity and experiences of discrimination profoundly shape their experiences of mental health, wellbeing, and access to care. This work began at a time when the system in Victoria was beginning to explore more deeply the meaning of cultural responsiveness in mental health and wellbeing practice.
Similarly, our team has also developed over time, bringing together staff from different disciplines including lived and living experience. Our work also aims to connect the dots between practice, policy, and contemporary conceptualisations of culture and mental health and wellbeing.
