New and emerging digital technologies have the potential to improve outcomes for patients amid increasing demand on the health-care system, South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton says.

Backing increased investment in digital health innovations, Mr Picton says the state needs a digital health strategy that is aspirational but also realistic and achievable.

"The strategy needs to be developed on stable technology foundations," he said.

"With increased dependence on technology in our hospitals, we need to make sure that the technology foundations provide resilience and business continuity.

"And while artificial intelligence has a role to play in health-care delivery, we need to ensure digital health innovation is designed in conjunction with the health-care workforce based on what they require to provide the best possible care for patients."

On Tuesday, Mr Picton met with 70 digital health industry leaders at the ANDHealth Digital Health Summit in Adelaide.

ANDHealth managing director Bronwyn Le Grice said the number of South Australian digital health companies had increased three-fold in the past three years.

"South Australia offers a fantastic environment for digital health companies to thrive, with its unique capabilities in medical technology and research," she said.

Digital technologies can be deployed across a wide range of applications in the health sector, including patient management, access to mental health services, anesthesiology and intensive care, blood pressure management, health alert services, and wearable sensors to monitor medical conditions.
