Mr Sassella, who oversaw the merger of the Metropolitan Ambulance Service and Rural Ambulance Victoria in 2008, says that after dedicating more than 30 years to the state's ambulance services he now wanted to devote more time to his family.

"On behalf of the board I would like to thank Greg for his outstanding contribution and wish him and his family all the best for the future," said Ambulance Victoria chair Linda Sorrell.

Victorian Health Minister David Davis applauded Mr Sassella's achievements during his 12 years as CEO.
